Black Panther Leader Elaine Brown To Give Special Spoken Word
Civil Rights champion and the last surviving member of Black Panther leadership Elaine Brown will open tomorrow’s Pyer Moss Couture 1 Fashion show, WAT U IZ, at Madame C.J. Walker’s estate.
Madame C.J. Walker was America’s first self-made female millionaire and her estate served as a gathering place for leaders of the renaissance. Now, Ms. Brown’s words herald another landmark moment for black culture in the midst of celebrating the Black Panther’s 55th Anniversary.
Motown Records and Black Forum recently re-released Elaine Brown’s seminal 1973 LP, Elaine Brown/Until We’re Free. The album is now available on all digital streaming platforms and a special reissue vinyl will be released October 8th via Black Forum/Motown Records. She stands out as a prison reform advocate, activist, writer, singer, and former Black Panther Party chairwoman who still actively affects cultural, social, and political change with her wisdom and wit.

For five generations, Ms. Brown has fought on the frontlines for equality and equity. At the epicenter of history in the making, she was the first and only woman to lead the Black Panther Party as chairwoman from 1974-1977, appointed by her mentor and comrade Huey Newton. She notably aligned the Panther’s cause with the battle against gay oppression at Stonewall, endured the Watt Riots, authored three books, recorded two albums, and founded and led multiple key organizations in the fight for justice.
