Celebrating the 20-year anniversary of 50 Cent’s debut album “Get Rich Or Die Tryin,” Ebro In The Morning selected 50 Cent’s greatest songs.
As hip hop celebrates its 50th birthday, Ebro in the Morning gears up for the HOT 97 Top 50 Songs In Hip Hop History Segment beginning Feb. 23 where every Thursday they will nominate some of the best tracks in hip hop history to find the BEST 50 in its 50 year-old-history.
On Thursday’s episode (February 2), the morning crew focused on 50 Cent’s incredible catalog. A panel consisting of Ebro In The Morning’s Ebro, Laura Stylez, Peter Rosenberg, Shani, and DJ Kast, a 30 minute plus debate occurred.
The final song selected wouldn’t just be the greatest 50 Cent song of all time, but a song which could land on hip hop’s top 50 songs of all time. Ultimately it will be up to the fans to decide which of the four songs selected regions supreme.
50 Cent’s debut album ‘Get Rich Or Die Tryin’ was released on February 6, 2003 and peaked at number 1 on the Billboard 200 selling over 872,000 copies in its first week of sales. The album quickly put Fif on the map and kick started his untouchable run.
Selecting first was Stylez who without hesitation selected a record she states “when it dropped it was absolutely everywhere.” From Hong Kong to any other part of the world, Laura Stylez ‘Wangsta,’ is her pick as 50 Cent’s greatest record of all time.
Up next was Peter Rosenberg who selected ‘In Da Club,’ over his personal choice of ‘What Up Gangsta.’ While DJ Kast agreed with Rosenberg, Shani went with ‘Many Men’ and Ebro selected ‘Patiently Waiting’ featuring Eminem.
“I honestly think there’s out of 50’s catalog, real talk, if we’re being completely honest, there’s three or four records that can potentially get voted on and win,” said Ebro. “They’re ‘In Da Club,’ ‘Patiently Waiting,’ ‘What Up Gangsta,’ and the last one I was gonna ask you to play is this ‘21 Questions.’”
Getting love were songs such as ‘50 Shot Ya‘ off DJ Kay Slay’s mixtape the Streetsweeper vol 1 and Fif’s comeback hit record ‘I Get Money.’
At the end the task at hand of selecting hip hop’s top 50 songs of all time could end up as a disaster as stated by Ebro. “I’m glad we are doing these warm up days as we get ready to pick songs for the greatest records in hip hop of all time,” said Ebro as the panel leaned towards having a maximum of one song per artist.
