Cardi B appeared on Nessa On Air and addressed the hate and label from some who suggest she only makes music for TikTok.
The Bronx native was in New York and appeared on Hot 97 to talk about her latest single ‘Hot Sh*t’ featuring Kanye West and Lil Durk. The single is indeed a vibe, as Cardi switches gears from her previous singles such as ‘WAP’ and ‘No Love.’
Even Cardi herself ensured fans the single is not a “TikTok” song. According to the twenty-nine year old artist, she is not pleased with “haters” trying to label her a TikTok artist. “I never did songs to blow up on TikTok,” Cardi B explained. “‘WAP’ was not intended to blow up on TikTok. A TikToker did a dance to ‘WAP’ and it went viral. Of course when things go viral, you wanna do it. But, I couldn’t do it. I couldn’t do the dance, but if it happens it happens.”
Released in 2020, ‘WAP’ was a huge success. Featuring Megan Thee Stallion, ‘WAP’ when on to sell 7x platinum and peaked at number one on 8 different Billboard charts.
“You might see something a certain type of way, but then it turns into something else. ‘Up’ to me was suppose to be a song that was like this is my energy. If its Up then its Up. Its like you wanna fight,” Cardi said. “But no it just become like a song that people be dancing and doing the dance in weddings. And, I’m like what happen? This wasn’t the intent.”
“That’s when haters are like, ‘Oh, you only make TikTok music. I didn’t blow up because of TikTok baby. I had three number ones before TikTok came. And I had a number one album. All the songs went platinum before TikTok even started.”
Cardi also stated that many have continued to hate on her and discredit her success. “They’re like, ‘Oh, it’s payola. A label made you this and that,” Cardi said. “Numbers never lie, but when it’s convenient for people, numbers are lies.”
