Akademiks came to Nas’ defense, after a recent Clubhouse appearance had 21 Savage saying the rap icon was irrelevant despite his recent success with his “King’s Disease” trilogy.
As 21 Savage enjoys his third #1 album with his recent Drake collaboration “Her Loss,” the rapper appears to downplay what many call the “golden era” of hip hop. According to 21 Savage longevity doesn’t mean much. “N***** saying all that longevity s***, but name another artist from back then that can still drop an album right now,” said 21. As others on the chat vouched for Jay-Z, Snoop Dogg, Scarface and Ghostface to name a few, 21 Savage was not impressed.
In fact, 21 Savage went as far as saying Nas is not relevant in 2022. “I don’t feel like he’s relevant,” he said over the call. “I just feel like he got a loyal fan base. He still makes good music,” explained the Atlanta rapper.
While 21’s comments have been met with backlash, surprisingly Akademiks who faced his own backlash a few weeks ago, defended the rap icon. Akademiks had previously stated that many of the older rappers were broke and “dusty.”
This time around Ak was siding with one of the “golden era’s” top stars. “I actually disagree with Savage on this. He starts talking about the opinion of what is relevancy. And I gotta say this. Nas is dropping in a week that we have Glo Rilla dropping. With all due respect to Glo Rilla, I f**** with Glo Rilla. Glo Rilla is tremendously talented. She is my favorite female artist at this time,” said AK on a live stream. “Nas is gonna out sell her.”
Nas recently dropped “King’s Disease’s 3,” produced by Hit-Boy. The album is expected to do very well despite the Queensbridge rapper not promoting or having a standard rollout for the project.
During the live stream, Ak’s argument has sales defining if an artist is relevant or not. “What is relevancy? Is it cause we’re talking about you,” said AK referring to Glo Rilla’s popular record ‘F.N.F.’ “Because there’s a lot of people that get talked about and don’t get paid. If Nas outsells these n***** we call popping and he does no promo. I don’t care if it’s his core fans who might be 50 or 60, he is relevant to the culture.”
